Building it

What it would take.

To build one: the SoC module goes on a custom main board with the modem, cameras, sensors and power chips; the screen, battery and boards fit in the aluminium frame under the glass back. Pets OS also needs drivers for each of these parts: today it runs on a virtual machine, so drivers are the biggest software job. Not included in the prices: board design and assembly, tooling, testing, and radio and safety certification (FCC / UKCA / CE). A good first prototype is the SoC module's development kit plus a phone-sized screen.

The parts list has 34 parts and adds up to about $523 for one phone, before design, assembly, testing and certification.

Stephone isn’t on sale. Pets OS is ready now.
